The Xia-Shang-Zhou Chronology Project, a five-year project supported by the Chinese government, released the chronology of the early dynasties of China in 2000, which was rather ambiguous before. The researchers not only used many historical documents, but also used various modern scientific methods in the project.

Chinese painting, the flower of Chinese culture, is distinguished by a spirit and an atmosphere of its own. It is entirely different from Western painting. Currently Chinese operas continue to exist in 368 different forms, like Hebei bangzi (Hebei), Henan opera (Henan), Pingju (Hebei), Qinqiang/Qin dynasty opera (Shaanxi), Huju (Shanghai), Kunqu, etc. The best known being Beijing opera, which assumed its present form in the mid-19th century and was extremely popular in the latter part of the Qing Dynasty. The traditional repertoire of Beijing opera includes more than 1,000 works, mostly taken from historical novels about political and military struggles. In the early years of the People''s Republic of China, the development of Beijing opera was encouraged; many new operas on historical and modern themes were written, and earlier operas continue to be performed.

Chinese musical instruments have been classified according to the materials used in their construction, namely, metal, stone, silk, bamboo, gourd, clay, skin and wood. Of later origin are various lutes and fiddles introduced to China from Central Asia. Chinese tea has a long history. China is the source of tea. Tea is the Chinese national drink. Chinese tea has enjoyed a reputation for
fragrance and health promoting functions for more than 4000 years. Tea was used as an offering in the West Zhou, as a vegetable in the spring and Autumn Period and as medicine in the Warring period. Later in the West Han Dynasty, it became a major commodity. Tasting tea and treating guests are Chinese individual elegant entertainment and social activities and spending time in a teahouse and tea party is a Chinese social tradition.
